Thank you for your interest in submitting to Funny-ish! Here’s our submission guidelines.
Please email all submissions as full pieces in the body of your email to firstname.lastname@example.org. Please do not include attachments!
We try to aim for a 1-3 week turn around, but this is subject to a great number of things (national news cycle, the editor’s “personal life,” the moon, etc.)
To help streamline our submission process, we are now asking you to fill out a little submission form when you submit a piece. It asks for your name, pronouns, contact, social handles, a short bio, and an optional to answer DEI identification that will only be used internally to help keep track with our diversity initiatives. You only need to fill this out once, and not with every submission.
If you’re submitting something timely, please title your email with “TIMELY – [title of your piece].” That way I can prioritize it. Our rough guidelines for “timely-ish” is a topic that will fade in relevancy in let’s say around 3 earth days.
Please note, seasonal or holiday focused humor is not timely as it comes once a year if you believe in a linear model of time. Try to send those with a month headway if possible to maximize the chances of your acceptance.
We no longer accept concurrent submissions.
WHO SHOULD SUBMIT?
Whoever dares to write comedy.
We love new writers. We love shy writers. We love BIPOC, female, non-binary, LGBTQ+ writers. We love weird ideas. We love pieces that have been rejected. We love pieces that aren’t easily categorized or are the wrong format for other places. We love lists. We love cartoons. We love funny-ish writing with an impactful message behind it. We love stupid-funny writing with no message behind it.
WHAT TYPE OF SUBMISSIONS ARE YOU LOOKING FOR?
We look for short form humor in many forms. Satirical, absurdist, cartoons, humor-based poetry, and more – we love it all. We do not accept flash fiction, sketches, personal essays, or headline based humor like The Reductress/The Onion/Flexx Mag.
Humor comes in all forms, so there’s no hard and fast rule. I will say anything over 1,000 words will need to justify that length, and ditto to anything under 200 (illustrations are subject to different guidelines.)
Rewrites/RESUBMISSION of the same piece?
We do not accept edits, rewrites, or resubmitting the same piece – unless asked by the editor.
Can I send you multiple *different* submissions?
Please only submit one piece at a time, and wait to hear back before submitting again. Your enthusiasm is very much appreciated though! (If it has been over three weeks, and you haven’t heard anything – feel free to send a little reminder nudge as something may have slipped through the cracks of gmail.)
Unfortunately, we are not able to offer pay at this time.
